Amityville, NY — Speco Technologies NR series of network video recorders (NVRs) are feature-rich, powerful units that offer analytics as well as a wealth of features to make an installers job easier.
One invaluable set of features on the NR recorders is the ability to manage and take control of your Power over Ethernet (PoE) outputs. The 4 & 8 Channel NRL and 8 & 16 Channel NRE all come with built-in PoE ports. These ports utilize one CAT5 cable between a camera and the recorder to not only provide power for a specific camera, but to send and receive data. Through the recorder, each port can be individually monitored to see how much power it’s drawing, and if need be, that port can also be turned off and then on again from the recorder to reset the camera. You can access this feature through Settings on your NVR interface, clicking Basic configuration, and then clicking PoE Power Management. For each PoE port, you can turn the power on and off as easily as selecting from a dropdown.
Another feature involving the PoE is called “Long line mode.” Instead of providing PoE power for the industry standard 100 meters (328’), it extends the line all the way up to 300M (984’) if using high quality CAT6 cable (200M using CAT5). The caveat to a longer range is that the top network speed of all your PoE ports will drop from 100MBPs to 10MBPs. However, for many applications, this will provide you with excellent speed and will be more than sufficient for your installation. This is invaluable in applications where you want to install a camera more than 328’ from the recorder. To access this feature, go to the Network settings tab, ensure you are in the TCP/IP section, and then click on “Internal Ethernet Port (Online).” There is a dropdown next to “Mode” that defaults to “Non-long line mode.” Click on the dropdown and select “Long Line Mode” and hit apply.
